Pupil Leadership

At Rowena Academy our children take great pride in their school and the community in which they live. They are very proactive and love to be involved in supporting our Academy in the following ways:

Academy Council

  • The Academy Council has given the children a greater understanding of their rights and responsibilities and has given the pupils a greater voice in the running of the Academy.
  • The Academy Council:
    • meet regularly and minute their meetings
    • are involved in the interview process for the appointment of new staff
    • hold regular non-uniform days to raise money for Sport Relief, Children in Need, Red Nose Day etc.
    • send out letters with the support of the Academy Council Lead
    • have established links with our local community including our local residential care home ‘Rowena House’, and St Peter’s Church.
    • have organised annual Shoe Box Appeals to support less fortunate children through the charity Samaritan’s Purse.

Rowena Rangers

The Year Two ‘Rowena Rangers’ are also voted for by their peers and are given responsibility for supporting other children at playtime and lunchtime. They take their roles very seriously and have a very positive impact on playground behaviour.

Playground Leaders

The ‘Playground Leaders’ are Year Two children who are trained by our coach from Active Fusion and work with one of the Midday Supervisors to set up a wide variety of games and equipment in the playground and then support children in playing them.

The introduction of ‘Playground Leaders’ has had a very positive impact on the opportunity for the children to participate in structured activities during lunchtimes. This has significantly contributed to improved behaviour at lunchtime and has contributed towards our effort to provide three hours of quality P.E a week for our children.

British Values Ambassadors

Our ‘British Values Ambassadors’ are Year One children who work alongside our Personal Development Lead, Mrs Heath, to ensure British Values are embedded across our school and curriculum. They support Mrs Heath in delivering key assemblies, planning events linked to BV and supporting other children in school with their understanding of BV.

The Ambassadors are very proud of their important role and take pride in discussion British Values in depth and explaining the work we do on British Values throughout the academy and how this is embedded in all we do. The introduction of this role within our leadership team has raised the profile of British Values even higher across our academy.

Book Buddies

Our ‘Book Buddies’ are Year Two children who have a particular interest in, enjoyment of, or flair for reading and who want to support others in developing a strong love of reading. Reading is high profile across the academy and we have various cosy reading areas children can enjoy both indoors and outside. Our wonderful ‘Book Buddies’ take their responsibility for keeping these areas tidy, set up and inviting, very seriously and they regularly read to and with children in other year groups, to support their progress in reading and development of a strong love of literature.

Careers Crew

Our ‘Careers Crew’ take on the responsibility of helping to plan and organise visits from professionals from various backgrounds who come and share information about their careers with us in school. We welcome visitors who have a strong passion for the career they do and want to showcase this to our pupils to support pupil aspiration and thoughts for the future. Our ‘Careers Crew’ support the selection and planning of these visits and also take a key role in interviewing visitors into our school to find out key information about career related learning so that we can add this to our school profile of career fact files.
